Softball Drops Owls in Wednesday DH

KEENE, N.H. – The New England College softball team swept their double-header at Keene State College in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at the Owl Athletic Complex in Keene, New Hampshire. With the two wins, the Pilgrims improved their record to 11-21.

GAME 1 – NEC 6, KSC 2
  • NEC junior pitcher Olivia Olson (North Haven, Conn.) was brilliant in the circle during the first game, striking out three Owls and allowing no earned runs over seven innings. The third-year hurler picked up her ninth win of the season.
  • NEC freshman catcher / second baseman Sonia Garcia (San Bernardino, Calif.) opened the scoring in the top of the first, launching an RBI double to left-center to plate graduate leftfielder Emily Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.), giving the 'Grims a 1-0 lead. On the very next at-bat, freshman first baseman Abigail Grimes (Baltimore, Md.) drove in Garcia with an RBI single to center. Finally, sophomore right fielder Amaya Rodriguez (Indio, Calif.) hit an RBI single to center to score Grimes, giving NEC the 3-0 lead.
  • Later leading 4-1 in the top of the sixth inning, NEC sophomore catcher Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.) gave the 'Grims a pair of insurance runs with a two-RBI single, plating Gagne and freshman centerfielder Lauren Hendricks (Fontana, Calif.).
  • Rodriguez went three-for-four in game one, while Gagne finished with two stolen bases.
GAME 2 – NEC 8, KSC 4
  • NEC freshman pitcher Wren Anhalt (Brooksville, Fla.) got the start in game two, picking up her first career victory while allowing just two earned runs over seven innings.
  • Garcia continued to be the hot bat for the Pilgrims in the nightcap, finishing with two hits, a double and three runs batted in.
  • Hendricks went three-for-four with a triple, a stolen base and two RBIs.
  • Lopez posted two hits, a double, a stolen base and two runs scored.
  • Gagne – playing a second base in game two – scored two runs with a stolen base.

  • NEC is back on the field on Saturday when they play at Anna Maria College in a crucial Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) double-header.
