Softball Can’t Stop Monks in GNAC Play

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College softball team lost both ends of their double-header against visiting Saint Joseph's College of Maine in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday at Old Concord Road Field in Henniker, New Hampshire. The Pilgrims took an 8-1 loss in the opener before falling short 6-2 in game two.

STANDOUTS
  • NEC senior pitcher Jocelin Vachon (Manchester, N.H.) got the start in game two, striking out a career-high six batters and allowing just five earned runs over seven innings.
  • NEC sophomore shortstop Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.) had a great day at the plate, going four-for-six with a double, a triple, a stolen base and a sacrifice hit. The second-year standout improved her batting average to a season-best .317.
  • NEC freshman first baseman Abigail Grimes (Baltimore, Md.) totaled three hits on the day with a double.
  • NEC freshman catcher / designated player Sonia Garcia (San Bernardino, Calif.) had an RBI infield single in the top of the sixth of game one to plate graduate leftfielder Emily Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.) for the Pilgrims only run of the game. Garcia also had an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first in game two, driving in sophomore second baseman Ashleigh Lemay (Derry, N.H.).
  • NEC sophomore catcher Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.) gave the 'Grims a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI groundout to score Giesler.
  • SJC sophomore second baseman Hannah Gosselin (Biddeford, Maine) led the Monks with four hits on the day, driving in three runs.
  • SJC junior leftfielder Paige Connery (Tyngsboro, Mass.) had four hits including a double and two RBIs.
  • SJC junior Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, Maine) pitched a gem in game one, allowing just one run over seven innings.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Sunday when they play host to the Massachusetts College of the Liberal Arts in a 1:00 p.m. double-header. The Pilgrims will be honoring the outgoing senior class as part of Senior Day prior to the game.
  • Saint Joseph's plays their next game at home against Albertus Magnus College on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
