Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Norwich on Senior Day

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College baseball team suffered a pair of losses to Norwich University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday at Laurie Cox Memorial Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.

GAME 1
Score: Norwich University 18, New England College 0
Records: Cadets 8-20, 5-6 GNAC | Pilgrims 5-21, 3-6 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cadets dominated game one from the very beginning, plating eight runs on seven hits in the second inning. Norwich would add three more in the third, ultimately cutting the outing of junior right-handed pitcher Corey O'Day (Nashua, N.H.) short after just four innings. Sophomore catcher Jackson Round (Cayuga, Canada) would pitch a scoreless fifth before running into trouble in the sixth, where Norwich would add five more runs in the inning.
  • On the other side, Matt Ingraffia (Lake Grove, N.Y.) would pitch a gem for the Cadets, throwing six scoreless innings while allowing just four baserunners and striking out nine Pilgrims.
  • Finally, with the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, NEC would turn to graduate infielder Cooper Ribaudo (Salem, N.H.) who was making his first career appearance on the mound. Ribaudo would allow the first three batters he faced to reach base, but the super-utility man would retire the next three Cadets in order to limit the damage. In his NEC career, Ribaudo played every single position besides catcher for the 'Grims.

GAME 2
Score: Norwich University 11, New England College 10
Records: Cadets 9-20, 6-6 GNAC | Pilgrims 5-22, 3-7 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After the bats only managed three hits in game one, NEC started the bottom of the first off with five consecutive hits. Ribaudo led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by junior infielder Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.). Senior infielder Brett Patnode (Weare, N.H.) would plate Ribaudo on a single to right center to score the team's first run of the day. Senior infielder Johnny Cannavo (Weymouth, Mass.) followed with a single of his own, scoring Philibotte. Graduate infielder Tyler Gendron (Milford, N.H.) kept it rolling with a hard-hit double to center to drive in Patnode. Two batters later, freshman outfielder Daemon Tarpley (Orlando, Fla.) grounded out but scored Cannavo in the process, giving the 'Grims a 4-0 lead after one.
  • Norwich managed to get one run back on the 'Grims in the third, as a leadoff double by freshman Dillan Garza (San Antonio, Tex.) would turn into a run two batters later on a sacrifice fly.
  • In the bottom of the third, Cannavo and Gendron would lead off with back-to-back singles before advancing on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore infielder David Spigel (Portsmouth, R.I.). Tarpley would come through with a single to center field to score Cannavo and give NEC a 5-1 advantage.
  • The Cadets would waste no time before cutting into that four-run Pilgrim lead, as a two-run home run to straightaway left field by Tyler Callahan (Arlington, Mass.) would make it a two-run game. Immediately, senior Owen Silk (North Haven, Conn.) would follow with a solo home run to the same spot past the left field wall. Suddenly, the NEC lead shrunk to one.
  • The visitors from Northfield, Vermont would add two runs in the top of the fifth to take hold of the lead and another run in the sixth to oust NEC starting pitcher junior right-handed pitcher Austin Hazzard (Weare, N.H.) after five-and-one-third innings. Freshman pitcher Samuel Pines (South Windsor, Conn.) would allow two of his inherited runners to score before getting out of the inning, trailing 9-5.
  • Freshman outfielder Jason Figuereo (Lynn, Mass.) would smack a one-out double in the bottom of the sixth and come around to score on a double by Ribaudo just one batter later. In the seventh, the 'Grims would inch closer as a leadoff single by Gendron would be capitalized upon. by junior infielder Tyler Fenton (Wilmington, Mass.) who hit a double to deep center field to bring NEC within two.
  • Just as NEC gets close, Norwich would add a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth, making it an 11-7 ballgame entering the bottom of the inning.
  • Norwich would turn to a new pitcher in the bottom of the eighth, and Ribaudo would greet the Cadet reliever with a home run to deep left field to kick off the half-inning. The long ball was Ribaudo's first of his NEC career and would bring the 'Grims back within three. Later in the inning, Gendron would come through with his second RBI of the game to score Philibotte and make it 11-9 Norwich.
  • Senior left-handed pitcher Nolan Stoney (Bedford, N.H.) would come out of the pen and hold the Cadets scoreless in the top of the ninth to keep the deficit at two. After a strikeout to begin the bottom of the ninth, Figuereo would reach via walk but get thrown out at second on a fielder's choice by Ribaudo who just narrowly avoided the double play at first. With two outs, Philibotte would keep the 'Grims alive with a single to left, and then Patnode would come through with a single of his own to score Ribaudo. With two outs and the winning run on first, the Cadets would come up with a huge strikeout to end the game and hold on for the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Norwich junior pitcher Noah Carpenter (Herkimer, N.Y.) pitched four innings of relief, punching out six and earning the win.
  • With two strikeouts in the first inning, Hazzard reached the 100-strikeout plateau as a 'Grim. He would end his outing with six strikeouts while taking the loss.
  • Ribaudo, Philibotte, and Cannavo each had three hits in game two. Ribaudo drove in two runs and scored thrice. Philibotte scored twice, while Cannavo drove in one and scored twice.
  • Patnode reached base four times with two hits, two walks, and two RBIs, while Gendron had a 4-for-5 day at the plate with two runs batted in.
  • Despite the loss, the 'Grims out-hit the Cadets 19-15 in game two.

SENIOR DAY

In between the two games, the team's graduating senior class was recognized by the baseball team and the entire NEC athletics department as part of Senior Day. The recognized senior class consisted of Ribaudo, Patnode, Cannavo, Stoney, catcher Quinn Mansperger (Hooksett, N.H.), catcher AJ Desarro (Longmeadow, Mass.), catcher/first baseman Lachlan Rees (Adelaide, Australia), and senior right-handed pitcher Stephen Dunham (Manchester, N.H.). These eight student-athletes were honored by coaches, teammates, family members, and fans for all of their accomplishments at NEC both on and off the field. Although their time with the program may be coming to an end, they will forever be a part of the 'Grims family.

UP NEXT
