Gagne Joins 100 Club as Softball Competes in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla – New England College graduate leftfielder Emily Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.) of the NEC softball team became the 21st player in modern school history to reach the 100-career hit milestone during the team's double-header at the Spring Games on Saturday afternoon at Fortune Road Field in Kissimmee, Florida. The Pilgrims suffered two narrow defeats with a 4-3 loss to the Stars of Dominican University of Illinois in the opener before a rally saw them come up just short against the Auggies of Augsburg University in the nightcap, 6-5. NEC finishes their day with a 2-7 record.

NEC 3, DOMINICAN 4
  • Trailing 4-0 in the top of the sixth and down to their final six outs, Gagne led off the inning with an infield single to shortstop, giving her 99 hits for her career. Gagne then immediately stole second base, giving her 74 career steals, tying the school record set by former NEC great Robin Thompson of the class of 2005. On the very next at bat, NEC sophomore shortstop Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice and Gagne beat the play to third. After Giesler stole second, the 'Grims had two runners in scoring position with no outs. That set the table for NEC sophomore second baseman Ashleigh Lemay (Derry, N.H.) who singled through the left side to drive in both players, pulling the Pilgrims to within two. Three batters later, NEC freshman catcher Sonia Garcia (San Bernardino, Calif.) cracked a single to left, scoring Lemay and pulling them to within one.
  • That was all the magic the 'Grims could conjure, however, as they were unable to extend the game with a run in the seventh. NEC also had singles from freshman first baseman Abigail Grimes (Baltimore, Md.), freshman centerfielder Lauren Hendricks (Fontana, Calif.) and freshman outfielder Arianna Bayze (Temecula, Calif.).
AUGSBURG 6, NEC 5
  • The 'Grims opened their game against the Auggies with two runs in the bottom of the first, as Grimes singled down the right field line to plate Lemay, and two batters later junior pitcher Olivia Olson (North Haven, Conn.) drove in in Grimes with an RBI single up the middle in her own cause.
  • Later down 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Gagne hit another infield single to lead off the inning. Giesler was right behind her with a bunt single, followed by yet another successful bunt from Lemay to load the bases with no outs. That set the table for NEC sophomore catcher Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.), who has unquestionably been enjoying a breakout season in Florida. The second-year standout crushed a bases clearing double to right-center, scoring three runs with a single swing of her bat.
  • Still down by one in the bottom of the sixth, NEC sophomore right fielder Amaya Rodriguez (Indio, Calif.) came to the plate with one out and drew a walk. Back-to-back singles by Hendricks and Gagne loaded the bases, but a fielder's choice out at the plate followed by a lineout let Augsburg off the hook as the Pilgrims took the loss.
  • NEC freshman pitcher Wren Anhalt (Brooksville, Fla.) pitched two and two-thirds shutout innings in relief, allowing just one hit.
  • Lopez went three-for-four at the plate for the game and finished the day hitting .517 for the season with a 1.312 OPS and eleven runs batted in over nine games. Gagne went three-for-three against Augsburg, doubling her season hit total over a single day.
UP NEXT
  • NEC will conclude their Florida trip on Sunday when they play Rutgers University-Newark at 10:00 a.m. and Curry College at 12:15 p.m., both games being played at Hancock Park in Clermont.
