Queen of Speed: Gagne Breaks Stolen Base Record as Softball Wraps Up in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – One day after making the 100 career hits list, New England College graduate leftfielder Emily Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.) of the NEC softball team became the program's all-time leader in career steals on Sunday afternoon at the Spring Games in Clermont, Florida, tallying four steals on the day as the Pilgrims won 6-0 over Rutgers University Newark before falling short in a 5-2 result to Curry College at Hancock Field. The Pilgrims conclude their trip down south with a 3-8 record.

RUTGERS NEWARK 0, NEC 6
  • The 'Grims wasted no time putting the Scarlet Raiders on the back foot as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first, beginning when NEC sophomore shortstop Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.) scored off an error after reaching on a hit-by-pitch and reaching second on a steal. Three batters later, NEC freshman centerfielder Lauren Hendricks (Fontana, Calif.) hit an RBI infield single to drive in NEC sophomore second baseman Ashleigh Lemay (Derry, N.H.). After a single by sophomore designated player Surena Montero (Bakersfield, Calif.) prolonged the inning, NEC sophomore right fielder Amaya Rodriguez (Indio, Calif.) smacked a single to right to plate Hendricks.
  • In the bottom of the second, Gagne led off the inning with a single to left field, then promptly stole second base on the very next pitch. Gagne, who came into the day tied with former Pilgrim great Robin Thompson (Class of 2005) with 74 career steals, thus became the program's all-time record holder. On the next batter, Gagne stole third, and an RBI fielder's choice by Lemay drove her home to increase the Pilgrims' lead to four. NEC sophomore catcher Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.) followed this up with an RBI groundout to score Giesler, giving the 'Grims a 5-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Gagne once again put on a clinic, leading off the inning by reaching on a bunt single, stealing second, reaching third on a sacrifice hit and finally scoring off an RBI double by Lemay.
  • The six runs would be all the Pilgrims would need, as NEC junior pitcher Olivia Olson (North Haven, Conn.) posted her best start of the season with a seven-inning shutout win, striking out four Raiders and allowing just five hits.
NEC 2, CURRY 5
  • Facing the Colonels of Curry in their second game of the day, the Pilgrims got on the board in the top of the first when Lemay drew a walk to get on, reached second on a ground out and then scored on a wild pitch, putting NEC ahead 1-0.
  • Later down 5-1 in the top of the sixth, Lopez came to the plate with one out. The second-year Pilgrim – enjoying a breakout week in Florida – crushed a triple to right field, then later scored off an RBI single from NEC freshman catcher Sonia Garcia (San Bernardino, Calif.).
  • That would be all the 'Grims could manage, as their run at the Spring Games came to an end. NEC freshman pitcher Wren Anhalt (Brooksville, Fla.) struck out four Colonels in just three innings. Gagne finished four-for-four at the plate.
UP NEXT
  • NEC returns to Henniker on Monday and are scheduled to be back on the field on Thursday when they travel to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy for a 4:00 p.m. double-header.
