Softball Splits at Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – The New England College softball team split their double-header at the Spring Games in Clermont, Florida on Thursday evening at Legends Way, winning 10-3 against Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Regis College in non-conference action before coming up short to Adrian College, 16-2. The Pilgrims run their record to 2-5 on the season.

NEC 10, REGIS 3
  • The 'Grims broke in the top of the fourth against the Pride as NEC sophomore shortstop Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to score sophomore third baseman Julia Maker (Warwick, R.I.). Two batters later, sophomore catcher Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.) continued to rip the cover off the ball as she hit a two-RBI single to left, driving in graduate leftfielder Emily Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.) and sophomore second baseman Ashleigh Lemay (Derry, N.H.). Finally, freshman first baseman Abigail Grimes (Baltimore, Md.) scored from third on an error as NEC went up 4-0.
  • Clinging to a 5-3 lead at the top of the sixth, Maker hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Grimes as the Pilgrims went up by three runs.
  • Still up 6-3 in the seventh, NEC slammed the door on Regis' comeback hopes with four more runs. Grimes opened the scoring with an RBI double to left, scoring Giesler. On the very next at bat, Lopez scored from third on a bad throw by the pitcher off a fielder's choice, increasing the lead to five. On the next at bat, Grimes would score off a fielding error, putting the Pilgrims up 9-3. Finally, Maker singled up the left side for an RBI, plating NEC sophomore pinch hitter Bella Kieran (Pelham, N.H.).
  • NEC junior pitcher Olivia Olson (North Haven, Conn.) picked up her second win of the season, scattering six hits and no earned runs over seven innings. Grimes had her best game as a 'Grim, with four hits and three runs scored.
ADRIAN 16, NEC 2
  • In game two, the Pilgrims found themselves down 3-0 in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded with one out. Grimes came to the plate and hit an infield single to third, beating out the throw and plating NEC sophomore leftfielder Kyndal Murawski (Putnam, Conn.) to get the 'Grims on the board. On the very next at bat, NEC freshman catcher player Sonia Garcia (San Bernardino, Calif.) hit an RBI fielder's choice to bring home Lemay, pulling the Pilgrims to within one at 3-2. Those were the only runs the 'Grims could manage, as the game ended after five innings.
