WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The New England College softball team split their double-header at the Spring Games in central Florida on Wednesday at the Diamondplex in Winter Haven, Florida, prevailing 3-1 in a thriller over the Bearcats of Saint Vincent College before facing the Spartans of Aurora University in the nightcap, battling to a 6-0 loss. The Pilgrims of NEC run their record on the season to 1-4.
NEC 3, SAINT VINCENT 1
- In the top of the top of the seventh, the Pilgrims found themselves trailing the Bearcats 1-0 and down to their final three outs of the game. NEC freshman centerfielder Lauren Hendricks (Fontana, Calif.) led off the inning with a blooping single to right field but was later thrown out on a stolen base attempt. Graduate leftfielder Emily Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.) smacked a ball up the left side and a misplay by the third baseman allowed her to take second. On the very next at bat, sophomore shortstop Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.) singled to shallow center then advanced on the throw, setting up second and third with just one out. That set the table for sophomore second baseman Ashleigh Lemay (Derry, N.H.) to single up the middle, playing Gagne and tying the game up. Two batters later, freshman first baseman Abigail Grimes (Baltimore, Md.) singled through the right side for the biggest hit of her career to date, driving in two more runs and giving the Pilgrims their first lead of the game, up 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh.
- In the bottom of the seventh, NEC junior pitcher Olivia Olson (North Haven, Conn.) retired the first two Bearcats before allowing a walk to give Saint Vincent one last chance. With the potential tying run at the plate, Olson got the batter to ground out to the circle, making the throw herself as the 'Grims picked up their first win of the season.
- Olson posted a strong performance in the circle for the 'Grims, not allowing a base-hit until the bottom of the fourth as she would allow just three hits and one earned run over seven innings.
AURORA 6, NEC 0
- Facing the Spartans of Aurora University, the Pilgrims were held to just three hits on the evening, singles by Lemay, sophomore outfielder Amaya Rodriguez (Indio, Calif.) and sophomore designated player Bella Kieran (Pelham, N.H.).
- A promising start by NEC freshman pitcher Wren Anhalt (Brooksville, Fla.) was spoiled in the top of the fifth inning when a critical fielding error with two outs resulted in four runs by Aurora. The rookie finished with two earned runs allowed over five-and-one-third innings, scattering nine hits.
- NEC senior pitcher Jocelin Vachon (Manchester, N.H.) allowed just two base-runners in one and two thirds innings, with no runs against.
UP NEXT
- NEC is back on the field on Thursday when they face Regis College and Adrian College at Legends Way at 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
