Baseball Drops Pair at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – The New England College baseball team dropped both games in a doubleheader against Colby College on Sunday afternoon at the Baseball and Softball Complex in Waterville, Maine, in non-conference action.

GAME 1
Score: New England College 0, Colby College 6
Records: Pilgrims 1-11 | Mules 5-2

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Colby College kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the second as a leadoff single came around to score on a throwing error on a stolen base attempt. The Mules would be held scoreless over the next two innings before breaking through with three runs in the fifth. Colby did not have an extra base hit in the inning, but four singles and a hit-by-pitch were sufficient to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.
  • After being held hitless through five innings, the 'Grims pieced together a two-out rally to run Colby starting pitcher Thomas Rioux (Derry, N.H.). Junior infielder Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) singled to center to break up the no-hit bid and then would advance to second on an opposite-field single by graduate infielder Bryce Worth (Southington, Conn.). Senior infielder Brett Patnode (Weare, N.H.) would reach on a hit-by-pitch before the Mules would squash the two-out rally with an inning-ending groundout.
  • Colby would add two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth before working around a single by sophomore outfielder Ryan Cote (Goffstown, N.H.) in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win in the first of two seven-inning games.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Colby starter Dioux earned the win after going five-and-two-thirds scoreless innings with eight strikeouts.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Austin Hazzard (Weare, N.H.) went the full six innings for the 'Grims, allowing five earned runs with four punchouts.
  • Outfielder Marcus Forrester (Marshfield, Mass.) carried the Colby offense, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and one run scored.
  • Both pitching staffs featured good control in this one, with NEC walking two and Colby giving up zero free passes.

GAME 2
Score: New England College 0, Colby College 12
Records: Pilgrims 1-12 | Mules 6-2

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The second half of the doubleheader was a close, low-scoring affair until the Mules put up seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning capped off by a three-run home run off the bat of junior Ryan Grace (Concord, Mass.) to seize control. The hosts added two more runs in each of the next two innings to finish off the 12-0 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Colby College sophomore pitcher Derek Woods (Rye, N.Y.) threw four innings of long relief to earn the win. NEC junior right-handed pitcher Corey O'Day (Nashua, N.H.) lasted four-and-two-thirds and was handed the loss.
  • Forrester had another strong game for the Mules, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two more RBIs and a run scored. Junior catcher Ethan Hillenberg (Groton, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a solo home run.
  • For the 'Grims, Cote went 1-for-3 with a double while Worth went 1-for-3 with a single and a stolen base.

UP NEXT

  • NEC is back on the field on Tuesday when they travel to Mansfield, Connecticut for a 3:00 PM game against Eastern Connecticut State University.
  • Colby plays their next game in Florida on Saturday as they face Ramapo College in a doubleheader beginning at 1:15 PM.
