Gendron Homers as Baseball Falls to WPI

NORTHBORO, Mass. – In their first game back north, the New England College baseball team suffered a 18-4 loss at the hands of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Engineers in non-conference action on Thursday at the New England Baseball Complex in Northboro, Massachusetts

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 4, WPI 18
Records: Pilgrims 1-9 | Engineers 8-1

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Down 4-0 entering the top of the second inning, senior catcher Lachlan Rees (Adelaide, Australia) and graduate infielder Bryce Worth (Southington, Conn.) strung together a pair of singles to lead off the inning. Graduate infielder Tyler Gendron (Milford, N.H.) came through with a single of his own to score Rees and put the 'Grims on the board.
  • WPI would take firm control of this one, adding four more runs in the bottom of the second, three in the third, and one additional run in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, junior infielder Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) would reach on a walk, steal second, advance to third on a single by senior infielder Brett Patnode (Weare, N.H.), and then score on a passed ball.
  • In the sixth, after Worth reached on his third single of the day, he would score on Gendron's second hit of the day, a towering two-run home run over the left-field fence. The blast was Gendron's first of the season and eighth of his career.
  • The Pilgrims would be held scoreless over the final three frames as WPI came away with a strong 18-4 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • WPI senior pitcher Noah Pins (Holden, Mass.) allowed two earned runs across five innings for the Engineers, striking out four and being credited with the win.
  • Patnode started and took the loss for the 'Grims, while sophomore Jackson Round (Cayuga, Canada) and freshman pitcher Liam Shaw (Colebrook, N.H.) both made appearances out of the bullpen.
  • Junior outfielder Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, N.J.) led the way for the hosts with five RBIs. Sophomore Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, N.Y.) reached base four times and drove in three runs.
  • NEC senior infielder Johnny Cannavo (Weymouth, Mass.) kept his hitting streak alive with a double in the seventh inning, extending the streak to 10 games. He also walked twice.
