Tough Sixth Sinks Baseball Versus Susquehanna

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The New England College baseball team fell in a late-night matchup against Susquehanna University at the Polo Grounds in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 4, Susquehanna 9
Records: Pilgrims 1-5 | River Hawks 3-7

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the bottom of the first inning the River Hawks quickly loaded the bases with no outs, but the 'Grims were able to get out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts by senior starting pitcher Stephen Dunham (Manchester, N.H.) and just one run allowed on a groundout.
  • Down just a run, the 'Grims kicked off the third inning with a walk from sophomore outfielder Harold Martinez (Wethersfield, Conn.) and a hard-hit single by junior infielder Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.). A couple batters later, senior infielder Johnny Cannavo (Weymouth, Mass.) would score Philibotte on a sacrifice fly to put NEC on the board and tie the game up at 1-1.
  • The River Hawks would retake the lead in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly of their own. The next half-inning, the 'Grims immediately tied the game back up on a double by Philibotte to score graduate catcher Aaron Robertson (Weare, N.H.).
  • Susquehanna would break through in the bottom of the sixth, breaking the tie and then some with five runs in the inning. They would add another run in the seventh on a wild pitch to push the lead to six.
  • In the top of the eighth, graduate infielder Tyler Gendron (Milford, N.H.) hit a leadoff single and came around to score on a wild pitch on a walk of Martinez. Fellow graduate infielder Cooper Ribaudo (Salem, N.H.) would score the team's second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Philibotte. The River Hawks would add one more run in the bottom of the inning to take the game by a final score of 9-4.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Following an injury to the Susquehanna starter after one inning, Anthony Colucci (Denville, N.J.) threw five innings of long relief allowing two runs (one earned) and being credited with the win. Adam Stuck (Havertown, Pa.) threw three innings to garner the save.
  • Dunham was effective for the 'Grims, going five-and-one-third innings allowing three earned runs while striking out six batters and taking the loss. Sophomore pitcher Brendan Hill (Lincoln, R.I.) went two-and-two-thirds in relief with two earned runs and four strikeouts.
  • Philibotte had a big day for NEC, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs batted in, and one run scored. Senior infielder Brett Patnode (Weare, N.H.) reached base twice, having done so now in all six games this season.
  • Cannavo is thriving under the South Carolina sun, as the senior now has six RBIs over the team's four spring break games.
  • Susquehanna walked more than NEC (10-6) but also struck out more (10-5).

UP NEXT

  • NEC has a quick turnaround with a doubleheader tomorrow against the United States Coast Guard Academy with the first game scheduled to start at 3:30 PM in a continuation of spring break action.
