Softball Drops Two to Mass Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The New England College softball team dropped both ends of their double-header at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in non-conference action on Thursday evening at Alison Rollins Field in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, falling just short in game one, 5-4, before an 8-2 loss in the night cap. The Pilgrims of NEC run their record to 3-10 on the season.

NEC 4, MASS MARITIME 5
  • Down 5-0 going into the top of the sixth inning, the Pilgrims were down to their final four outs of the game when NEC freshman first baseman Abigail Grimes (Baltimore, Md.) reached on an infield single, then took second base off a wild pitch. That set the table for freshman designated player Sonia Garcia (San Bernardino, Calif.) who hit an RBI single to right to drive in Grimes and get the 'Grims on the board. A fielding error on the very next at bat scored freshman pinch runner Arianna Bayze (Temecula, Calif.), and a stolen base by freshman centerfielder Lauren Hendricks (Fontana, Calif.) setup sophomore outfielder Carlie Panas (Chester, N.H.) for the first RBI base hit of her Pilgrim career, as Hendricks crossed home plate pulling NEC to within one.
  • In the top of the seventh, Garcia picked up her second RBI hit of the day when she singled home sophomore second baseman Ashleigh Lemay (Derry, N.H.). But a fielder's choice and a ground out saw the Pilgrims come up just short.
NEC 2, MASS MARITIME 8
  • The Pilgrims scored first in game two, as Hendricks came to the plate with sophomore infielder Bella Kieran (Pelham, N.H.) on-base and doubled to right field for an RBI, putting NEC ahead 1-0.
  • In the top of the sixth with the Pilgrims trailing 4-1, NEC sophomore pinch hitter Surena Montero (Bakersfield, Calif.), enjoying a breakout second year, came to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded and smacked a single up the middle, driving home Kieran to pull her team to within two.
  • That was as close as the Pilgrims would get, as the Buccaneers posted four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to close out the game.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Tuesday when they travel to Salem State University for a 4:00 p.m. double-header.
