Women’s Basketball Holds Off Cadets to Run Streak to Four

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's basketball team ran their winning streak to four on Wednesday evening at the Bridges Gymnasium in Henniker, New Hampshire with a 63-50 victory over visiting Norwich University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

THE BASICS
Score:                    Norwich 50, New England College 63
Records:               Pilgrims 12-10, 7-4 GNAC | Cadets 8-13, 2-9 GNAC

TURNING POINTS
  • The first half was up-tempo as both teams sought to push the action. The 'Grims took a 17-point lead off a layup from NEC sophomore guard Makiah Scott (Washington, D.C.) with 4:40 to go in the second quarter before a late surge by the Cadets cut the lead to 38-24 going into halftime. NEC junior guard Amya Moss (Norfolk, Va.) led all scorers with nine points in the opening period.
  • In the third quarter the game bogged down as Norwich clawed their way back into contention; an 8-2 run capped off with a pair of free throws by senior guard Silas Bernier (Jaffrey, N.H.) pulled them to within five with 1:46 remaining. The teams entered the final stanza with NEC clinging to a 47-41 lead.
  • In the fourth, a series of early fouls went against the Pilgrims and the Cadets pulled to within three. But a clutch layup from Scott followed by a steal and a free throw seconds later put NEC back up by eight with 6:25 left in the game. Then with 3:31 remaining, Scott would make it eight again on a diving layup. With 1:43, NEC senior guard Alissia Corona (Wylie, Tex.) buried a jumper from just inside the arc, giving the hosts a 57-48 lead, their largest advantage since late in the third, and Norwich would not threaten again.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Scott would lead the 'Grims with 17 points (her second-highest career total) to go along with four rebounds, four assists and three steals in superb overall performance.
  • Norwich junior forward Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) led the Cadets with 16 points and eight rebounds.
  • Moss added 11 points with two steals, while NEC junior-transfer guard Krystle Medrano (Ontario, Calif.) matched her NEC-best performance with nine points off the bench.
  • Norwich junior guard Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) contributed 14 points and six rebounds.
  • NEC senior center Kathleen Rodriguez (McFarland, Calif.), last week's GNAC Player of the Week who entered the game having made 23 consecutive field goal attempts dating back to last Tuesday's 58-52 win at Regis College, had her streak snapped at 24 with a missed hook with 6:35 remaining in the third quarter. Rodriguez overcame a slow start to finish Wednesday night's game with seven points and six rebounds.
  • Three-point shooting proved critical, with the Pilgrims going 5-of-20 while the Cadets went 1-for-12.

UP NEXT
  • Up next for NEC, the team will host Johnson & Wales University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in GNAC action. The Pilgrims are scheduled to honor their graduating senior class prior to the game as part of senior day.
  • Norwich hosts their own senior day on Saturday when they play Lasell University in a 3:00 p.m. matchup.
