HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's ice hockey team suffered a narrow non-conference loss to visiting Plymouth State University on Tuesday at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, New Hampshire.
THE BASICS
Score: Plymouth State 3, New England College 2
Records: Panthers 2-1 | Pilgrims 0-3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Panthers got the scoring started when they seized an early power play opportunity when a scramble in front of the Pilgrim net resulted in a goal by PSU's Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.) 6:30 into the first period. A few minutes later, the Panther lead would grow to two as Plymouth's Morgan Cunningham (Wrentham, Mass.) got in close and snuck in another goal for the visitors.
- 6:25 into the second period, the Pilgrims would get on the board; junior forward Olivia Lindberg (Stockholm, Sweden) wrapped around the Panthers' net and found junior forward Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.) who used a quick one-timer to beat the goaltender to the weak side to make it a 2-1 game.
- Late in the third, the Panthers would once again take advantage of a power play and Emma Lemery (Queensbury, N.Y.) would receive a pass from Porrello directly in front of the NEC net and sent a shot into the top left corner to go up 3-1.
- A minute later, the Lindberg-Gilchrist connection came through for the second time of the game. Gilchrist passed the puck off to Lindberg behind the Panthers' net and Lindberg gave it right back to a cutting Gilchrist who completed the give-and-go with a nifty flick into the back of the net for her second score of the game.
- This matchup came down to the wire, with the 'Grims pulling their goalie and putting multiple shots on target in the final 20 seconds, but the Panthers were able to hold on for the 3-2 win.
