HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's ice hockey team lost 3-2 to the visiting team from the University of Southern Maine on Friday evening at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, New Hampshire in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.
THE BASICS
Score: New England College 2, Southern Maine 3
Records: Pilgrims 0-8-0, 0-5-0 NEHC | Huskies 4-2-1, 3-1-1 NEHC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first period, the Pilgrims would get on the board first as NEC junior forward Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.) scored on a putback right in front of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season with assists to senior defender Jessica Dutkus (Stafford, Va.) and junior forward Kate Devlin (Walpole, Mass.) to go up 1-0 just 4:42 into the second.
- The Huskies of Southern Maine would quickly respond, however. Just 3:09 later, USM senior forward Ally Stymiest (Moncton, N.B.) would tie it up with her team-leading fourth goal of the season, that assisted by freshman forward Makenzie Woodford (Cornwall, Canada).
- Then with 10:54 remaining in the second, the visitors took their first lead of the game when USM junior forward Saige MacLeod (Dryden, Ont.) scored her first goal of the season, assisted by freshman forward Grace Inoue (Ottawa, Ont.) and junior defender Isabella Colarusso-Sprang (Northfield, Ohio). The lead extended to two just 4:46 later when USM junior defender Audrey Donahue (Timberlea, N.S.) scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Woodford. The Huskies went into the second intermission leading 3-1.
- With time running out in the third and still down by two goals, the Pilgrims got one back with 6:52 left in the game when they capitalized on a five-on-three power play when NEC junior defender Jordan Pond (Gardner, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season to pull them to within one, assisted by junior forward Olivia Lindberg (Stockholm, Sweden). It was the first power-play goal allowed by the Huskies in 19 chances on the season, who had previously led the NEHC with a 100 percent penalty-killing mark.
- That was as close as NEC would come, however, as two late penalties prevented them from tying it up.
