HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College men's ice hockey team finished off an impressive weekend with a shutout win against visiting Norwich University on Saturday at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, New Hampshire in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.
THE BASICS
Score: Norwich University 0, New England College 2
Records: Cadets 2-2-1, 2-1-1 NEHC | Pilgrims 1-2-1, 1-0-1 NEHC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The goalkeeper battle from last night's game between freshman goaltender Anthony Beaulieu (Lawrence, Mass.) and Norwich's Sami Molu (Toronto, Ont.) continued through the first two periods of Saturday's rematch, with both teams being held off the scoreboard.
- Midway through the third period, senior forward David Novotny (Boca Raton, Fla.) stole the puck around the visitors' blue line and jumpstarted a fast break towards the Cadet net. Novotny attracted the attention of Norwich's final defender and found sophomore center Paul Waldhauser (Klagenfurt, Austria) skating open on the weak side of the Norwich defensive zone; Waldhauser slapped the puck into the top left corner of the net to break the scoreless tie with 10:13 left in the game
- The score would remain 1-0 deep into the third period and would force Norwich to pull Molu for the extra skater opportunity with 1:18 to play. The man-up chance did not go to plan for the Cadets, as just nine seconds later Novotny stole the puck from the Norwich defender in their own defensive zone, spun around, and scored on the empty Cadet net. The Pilgrims would hold on for the 2-0 win for a successful opening weekend to the team's conference slate.
