STANDISH, Maine - The New England College field hockey team got back on track with a dominant 3-0 win over the St. Joseph's College of Maine in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Tuesday evening at the SJC Athletics Complex in Standish, Maine.
THE BASICS
Score: New England College 3, St. Joseph's (ME) 0
Records: Pilgrims 9-3, 4-2 GNAC | Monks 5-6, 5-2 GNAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first quarter for both teams, the Pilgrims looked to take advantage of a penalty corner four minutes into the second – something the team has done well all season long. Senior midfielder Taylor Bailey (Boscawen, N.H.) inserted the ball to the top of the circle before it was passed around the arc before finding sophomore forward Adelaide Kelly (Rockport, Maine) just to the keeper's left. Kelly received the pass and immediately snuck the ball past the Monks last line of defense and found Bailey on the opposite side of the net who delivered her fourth goal of the season.
- With 2:27 left before halftime, NEC would capitalize on another penalty corner taken by Bailey. The ball ended up in the possession of junior midfielder Tatum Golis (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Golis fired a shot on goal that was kicked away by Monk's goalkeeper Kassidy Collins (Gardiner, Maine). The rebound was picked up by senior midfielder Meaghan McCamish (Warwick, R.I.) and the senior used a quick spin and strike to put the 'Grims up 2-0.
- The score would remain the same until halfway through the fourth quarter when Bailey sent a ball into the circle which was deflected by junior forward Cristina Manzi (Peapack, N.J.) towards the Monk's goal but was stopped on a strong stick save by Collins. However, Manzi would collect the deflection, and her second try would not be denied – rattling home her sixth goal of the season – sending the 'Grims home with the 3-0 win.
