Field Hockey Stops Blue Jays on Senior Day

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College field hockey team won 2-1 over visiting University of Saint Joseph in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Don Melander Field in Henniker, New Hampshire. The match came immediately after the Pilgrims recognized this year's senior class as part of Senior Day.

THE BASICS
Score:                  University of Saint Joseph 1, New England College 2
Records:              Blue Jays 9-5, 5-3 GNAC  | Pilgrims 10-3, 5-2 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • NEC graduate forward Drea Chin (Laconia, N.H.) got the 'Grims on the board 12:16 into the game when she took a pass from sophomore midfielder Isabelle Toupin (Derry, N.H.) and turned and blasted a shot past the Saint Joseph defense for her fourth goal of the season and the 65th of her storied Pilgrims career to put the hosts up 1-0. The Blue Jays found the equalizer with just 32 seconds left in the first quarter off a goal from USJ junior forward Aurelia Barker (Thomaston, Conn.) and the teams would go into halftime tied 1-1.
  • With 6:36 left in the third quarter, it would be NEC midfielder Meaghan McCamish (Warwick, R.I.), the Pilgrims' leading scorer, who would break the stalemate as she took a diving pass from Chin and finished right in front of the USJ net for her team-leading eleventh goal of the season, giving the 'Grims a 2-1 lead going into the final quarter.
  • The score would hold up as NEC would win their second straight game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC junior goalkeeper Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.) tallied four saves in net for the Pilgrims.
  • USJ sophomore goalkeeper Jaci Felix-Hull (East Lyme, Conn.) finished with three stops for the Blue Jays.
  • Total shots were 12-11 in favor of the Blue Jays.
  • At press time, McCamish ranked fifth in the GNAC in scoring and points.
SENIOR DAY
  • Prior to the game, the New England College field hockey program and the NEC athletics department recognized this year's senior class as part of senior day. Chin, McCamish, midfielder Taylor Bailey (Boscawen, N.H.) and defender Kate Bourgeois (Troy, Maine) were honored by coaches, teammates, family members and fans for all of their accomplishments at NEC both on and off the field. Although their time with the program may be coming to an end, they will forever be a part of the 'Grims family.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Wednesday when they travel to Rivier University for a 7:00 p.m. game against the Raiders.
  • USJ also plays their next game against Rivier, that coming next Saturday in Nashua at 12:00 p.m.
