HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College field hockey team suffered its first conference loss of the season on Wednesday night against visiting Colby-Sawyer College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Don Melander Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.
THE BASICS
Score: Colby-Sawyer College 1, New England College 0
Records: Chargers 7-3, 5-1 GNAC | Pilgrims 8-2, 3-1 GNAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half of this conference showdown was dominated by the defenses, allowing just four shots on goal in the first 30 minutes between the two teams. Both groups created a couple of strong scoring chances in the first half, however both defensive groups snuffed them out before they could become too dangerous.
- The Chargers created a few more opportunities coming out of halftime, rattling off three shots on goal in the third quarter, but junior goalkeeper Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.) saved all three to keep the scoreless tie alive.
- In the fourth quarter, it was the 'Grims who dominated the time of possession in the opposition's territory. NEC had six penalty corners in the period and put three shots on net, but Chargers goalkeeper Ashlee Blashock (Lebanon, N.H.) denied all three. NEC's best opportunities came in the final three minutes, as graduate forward Drea Chin (Laconia, N.H.) sent a strike from the left side with 2:57 to go, and junior forward Cristina Manzi (Peapack, N.J.) took a shot off a corner from the right side with just 1:06 to play.
- With the 0-0 score remaining on the scoreboard in the final moments of regulation, a green card on the Pilgrims set the stage for an overtime period of six-on-seven for just under two minutes of action. Colby-Sawyer quickly took advantage of the "man-up" opportunity and Brooke Farquhar (Gorham, Maine), who had been the Chargers' best shot creator all night, delivered the game-ending goal 17 seconds into the overtime period.
