Men’s Soccer Draws with Regis in Conference Matchup

WESTON, Mass. - The New England College men's soccer team drew a tie at Regis College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday at Regis Stadium in Weston, Massachusetts.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College: 1, Regis College: 1
Records: Pilgrims 3-4-6, 2-3-5 GNAC | Pride: 4-7-2, 4-6-1 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Regis started the match dominating offensively as the Pride got off two shots early, which were saved by senior goalkeeper Hayden Walker (Manchester, N.H.). The Pilgrims then kept the pressure on Regis goalie Kyle Weidemann (Piscataway, N.J.) and got off four shots, with two from senior midfielder Darren Mota (Inverness, Scotland) within 12 minutes.
  • Mota would take a corner kick where he found sophomore forward Chase Gurtowsky (Torrington, Conn.), who completed the header to give NEC the 1-0 lead in the 29th minute.
  • Regis would take control offensively to close the first half with five shots from four corner kicks in the final 15 minutes, with a yellow card issued to Regis.
  • It didn't take long for the Pride to tie things up as the second half kicked off with two chances from NEC converting into two shots for Dane Petersen (San Diego, Calif.), who knotted things up with a goal.
  • The two teams would trade chances with physical play keeping either team from taking a lead before time expired.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Pilgrims and Pride split 34 shots almost right down the middle, as Regis edged NEC with 18 with six on goal compared to the Pilgrims' sixteen with five on goal.
  • Off a total of eleven shots on goal, Walker was able to make five saves, beating Weidermann's four.
  • Despite having six corner kicks in the first half, Regis was not able to find another as NEC were able to get six of their nine corners in the second half.
  • Physicality prevailed in this draw as twenty fouls were split between the two teams.
