Women’s Ice Hockey Drops Vikings for First 4-Game Winning Streak Since 2015

SALEM, Mass. – The New England College women's ice hockey team, back on the ice for the first time in nearly a month, won 7-2 at Salem State University on Friday evening at Rockett Arena in Salem, Massachusetts in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action. With the victory, the Pilgrims have won four consecutive games for the first time since the 2015-2016 season when the won five straight games between November 20th through December 11th, 2015.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Down 1-0 midway through the first period, the Pilgrims stormed into the lead by scoring three goals in the final 5:49 of the opening stanza, a run capped off with an even-strength goal from sophomore forward Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.) that proved to be the eventual game-winner with 2:16 to go, assisted by freshman forward Alexis Hornsby (Atkinson, N.H.), the three-time NEHC Rookie of the Week, and sophomore forward Olivia Lindberg (Stockholm, Sweden).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • With the victory, NEC secures their first league win of the season, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
  • NEC sophomore goaltender Amy Donnelly (Taunton, Mass) posted a solid outing in the net for the 'Grims, tallying 24 saves for her fourth win of the season.
  • Salem State senior goaltender Kaia Hollingsworth (Methuen, Mass.) finished with 33 stops for the Vikings.
  • Gilchrist finished with two goals and an assist for the Pilgrims, and at press-time was second on the team in points with 13.
  • Hornsby, the Pilgrim of the Month for December who won her third consecutive conference Rookie of the Week award just before the break, finished her night with one goal and two assists, leading the team with 15 points on the season, at press time ranking her second in the NEHC in just her first season.
  • NEC senior forward AK Fuentes (Aspen, Colo.) scored her first goal of the season – that being the Pilgrims' first goal of the game to tie it up at 1-1 in the opening period – and had an assist besides.
  • Salem State senior forward Deanna Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) scored the first goal of the evening, that coming 10:08 into the opening period.
  • Lindberg tallied two assists for the evening.
  • The Pilgrims also had goals from graduate forwards Cassie Kelly (Alexandria, Minn.) and Mikayla Vincent (Newburyport, Mass.) and from sophomore defender Jordan Pond (Gardner, Mass.).
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the ice on Saturday when they look to make it five in a row on the road at the University of Southern Maine in NEHC action, with the puck dropping at 3:00 p.m.
  • Salem State plays their next game at home on Saturday against Norwich University, that also coming at 3:00 p.m.
