Number One Hobart Too Much for Men’s Ice Hockey

Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. – Playing the number one team in the nation in visiting Hobart College, the New England College men's ice hockey team fell short 5-0 on Friday evening at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, New Hampshire in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first period, the Statesmen got on the board 3:56 into the second period when Hobart senior forward Christian Duvall (York, Pa.) beat the Pilgrim defense and scored his second goal of the season, assisted by senior defenseman Matthieu Wuth (Westminster, Colo.) and senior forward Wil Crane (Littleton, Colo.), as the visitors took a 1-0 lead.
  • Hobart made it 2-0 with 13:09 left in the second when sophomore forward Tanner Daniels (Edinboro, Pa.) scored his fourth goal of the season, assisted by freshmen defensemen Conor Lally (Scarborough, Maine) and Bauer Morrissey (Skaneateles, N.Y.).
  • The visitors took a three-goal lead with 1:26 remaining in the second when Hobart junior defenseman Cooper Swift (West Hartford, Conn.) scored his second goal of the season, assisted by junior forward Luke Aquaro (Yardley, Pa.). The teams would head into the final period with the Statesmen still leading 3-0.
  • With 8:56 left in the third, Hobart sophomore forward Tristan Fasig (Sherman, Conn.) extended the lead to four with his fourth goal of the year, assisted by Daniels and sophomore forward Kahlil Fontana (Duncan, B.C.).
  • Finally, with 4:15 remaining in the game, Hobart junior forward Ethan Mulhearn (Williamstown, Ontario) scored his second goal of the season, assisted by Lally and Duvall, giving the Statesmen five on the night.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC senior goaltender Kai Tomita (Misawa, Japan), who suffered his first career loss to the Statesmen earlier this season, posted a heroic performance in net for the 'Grims, tallying 40 saves on the night including a shutout first period.
  • Hobart sophomore goaltender Mavrick Goyer (Ste-Sophie, Quebec), with the nation's best scoring defense behind him, picked up the shutout win, finishing with 15 stops on the night.
  • NEC junior forward Ike Taraszewski (Wayzata, Minn.) finished with three shots on goal for the Pilgrims, while freshman defenseman Cam Perez (West Hartford, Conn.) stood out with four shots and four blocks.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the ice on Saturday when they host Elmira College, the number two-ranked team in the nation, in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
  • Hobart plays their next game at Norwich University on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
