HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against visiting Colby-Sawyer College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday evening at Don Melander Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.
THE BASICS
Score: Colby-Sawyer 1, New England College 1
Records: Pilgrims 2-0-4, 1-0-3 GNAC | Chargers 2-4-1, 1-2-1 GNAC
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a flurry of Charger shots were turned away by NEC junior goalkeeper Hayden Walker (Manchester, N.H.) and a determined 'Grims defense, the home team answered in the 15th minute when NEC junior midfielder William Scala (Manchester, N.H.) took the ball into the left corner and put a beautiful cross over the turf, finding a streaking freshman midfielder Santiago Sanchez (Guatemala City, Guatemala) who blasted it into the lower-left corner of the net for his third career goal as the Pilgrims went up 1-0.
- With 9:19 to go in the first, Colby-Sawyer found the equalizer when NEC failed to clear a free quick and a deflected header from first-year defender Judson DiMaria (Acton, Mass.) found first-year forward Kaden Lewis (Lunenburg, Mass.) who finished for his second career goal as the game went into halftime tied at 1-1.
- With one second left, the 'Grims had one last chance to steal it on a shot from junior defenseman Darren Mota (Inverness, Scotland). But the keeper deflected the ball off his fingertips, it would deflect off the crossbar and NEC couldn't get to the putback in time.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Walker finished with eight saves in net for the Pilgrims, continuing his brilliant run of performances this season.
