Field Hockey Loses Overtime Thriller to Keene State

HENNIKER, N.H. – New England College and Keene State College battled deep into a second overtime period before the Owls finally prevailed, winning the game 3-2, on Thursday night at Don Melander Field in Henniker, New Hampshire.

THE BASICS
Score: Keene State 3, New England College 2
Records: Owls 4-2, 0-0 LEC | Pilgrims 2-3, 2-1 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a scoreless first period of play, the 'Grims would break the scoreless tie 7:24 into the second quarter on an unassisted goal by freshman forward Adelaide Kelly (Rockport, Maine).
  • Keene, coming out of the half down 1-0, would score two consecutive goals late in the third quarter, the first coming off the stick of sophomore Grace Bazin (Westminster, Vt.) with 3:13 left in the quarter, and the second being scored by junior Irini Stefanakos (Fitchburg, Mass.) just two minutes later.
  • Entering the fourth period, trailing by one, NEC was in search of an equalizer. With 7:39 left in the game, graduate forward Mikayla Vincent (Newburyport, Mass.) would make a run and score a huge game-tying goal. The two defenses would hold firm for the reminder of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
  • The two teams were now faced with two, 10-minute overtime periods in a golden goal situation. With just seven players on the field for each team, the pressure was on.
  • Both NEC and Keene were presented with shot opportunities early in the first overtime period, but neither team could find the back of the net. The best opportunity came for the Owls around the 1:35 mark, where Keene State rattled off two straight shots on goal from point blank range, but NEC sophomore goalkeeper Makenzie Anderson (Antrim, N.H.) made a pair of remarkable saves to keep the 'Grims alive.
  • In the final 30 seconds of the first overtime, a steal by Vincent led to a fast-break opportunity for junior midfielder Meaghan McCamish (Warwick, R.I.) who made a diving attempt at sneaking a shot past the Keene State goalie but missed just wide.
  • The game would advance to the second and final overtime period, and although fatigue was setting in, both teams were continuing to get good looks at the net. Approaching just two minutes remaining, Bazin got in close and served up a shot on NEC's goal. Anderson made a diving save, but it was Bazin who got her own rebound and sent it into the back of the net, ending the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Vincent led all players with 10 shots, while graduate forward Drea Chin (Laconia, N.H.) took seven. Kelly took just one shot off the bench for the 'Grims, but made it count as she scored her team-leading third goal of the season.
  • Bazin led the Owls' offensive efforts, taking nine shots and scoring two goals.
  • Anderson stopped 12 shots for NEC, including some highlight-worthy saves in overtime.
  • Sophomore Clara Gorman (Stratham, N.H.) started in goal for the Owls and tallied 11 saves.
