Baseball Splits with Monks

STANDISH, Maine – The New England College baseball team split their Sunday double-header at Saint Joseph's College Maine at Mahaney Diamond in Standish, Maine, falling just short in game one, 4-3, before holding on to win game two, 3-2.

TURNING POINTS
  • Trailing 4-1 going into the fourth inning of game one, NEC sophomore shortstop Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) hit an RBI single to center to drive in junior first baseman Brett Patnode (Weare, N.H.). Then in the top of the fifth, senior centerfielder Luca Giallongo (Mt. Shasta, Calif.) launched a sacrifice fly to plate senior right-fielder Patrick Hagerty (Stoughton, Mass.) to pull the Pilgrims to within one. But that was as close as they would come as they fell just short in a seven inning game.
  • Down 1-0 early on in game two, the 'Grims got rolling in the top of the fourth when they loaded the bases and senior catcher Alex Perez (Leominster, Mass.) drew a hit-by-pitch to bring in the game-tying run. On the very next at-bat, freshman right-fielder Ryan Cote (Goffstown, N.H.) hit a two-RBI single through the right side to give NEC a three-run lead.
TOP GRIMS
  • NEC senior pitcher Wyatt Cameron (Salisbury, Vt.) struck out six Monks in six innings in game one.
  • Sophomore pitcher Austin Hazzard (Weare, N.H.) picked up the game two win with four strikeouts while senior pitcher Tim Krol (East Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up the save.
  • Sophomore left-fielder Kyle Dobrie (Mastic, N.Y.) totaled three hits on the day.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Wednesday when they travel to Albertus Magnus College for a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m. game.
