Baseball Bested by Beacons

BOSTON, Mass. - The New England College Baseball team traveled to UMass-Boston and fell to the Beacons in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday in nonconference play.

THE BASICS
Score: New England College 6, UMass-Boston 18
Records: Pilgrims 9-18 | Beacons 18-10

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the top of the first inning, the Pilgrims would go up early as sophomore shortstop Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) singled and senior designated hitter Sylvain Audet (Springfield, Mass.) walked, with both scoring on an RBI single by junior catcher JD Normand (Auburn, N.H.). However, the Beacons would respond with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, followed up by six more in the second to take an 8-2 lead.
  • In the third, the 'Grims would spark a little two-out rally when sophomore outfield Kyle Dobrie (Mastic, N.Y.) hit an infield single followed by another Audet walk. Once again, it was Normand who came through with a double to right field to score both NEC baserunners and cut the deficit to four.
  • The UMass-Boston offense proved to too tough to slow down, as the Beacons added five runs in the bottom of the third, later followed by three more in the fifth inning.
  • In the ninth inning, the Pilgrims got hits from juniors AJ Desarro (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Aaron Robertson (Weare, N.H.) followed by an RBI groundout by junior Johnny Cannavo (Weymouth, Mass.) to cap off the team's third two-run-inning of the game. But the damage had already been done, with the Beacons winning 18-6.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Josh Eastman (Marshfield, Mass.) started for UMass-Boston and went four innings while allowing three earned runs. Meanwhile, NEC starter Christopher Chagnon (Portsmouth, R.I.) took the loss for the 'Grims.
  • The Pilgrims were led offensively by Normand who went two-for-four with three RBIs.
  • Both Philibotte and Audet reached base three times, with Philibotte going two-for-three with a walk and a run scored, while Audet walked three times and scored twice.
  • UMass-Boston's senior second baseman Aidan Blake (Lakeville, Mass.) had five RBIs for the Beacons including a third inning triple.
