Baseball Opens Season with Rally to Tame Lions

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England College baseball team opened their 2023 season with a 5-4 victor at Emerson College on Thursday evening at the New England Baseball Complex (NEBC) in Northborough,
Massachusetts.

THE BASICS
Score:                    New England College 5, Emerson 4
Records:               Pilgrims 1-0 | Lions 0-2

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The 'Grims struck first in the top of the second inning as NEC sophomore shortstop Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) doubled to left field to drive in senior designated hitter Tyler Gendron (Milford, N.H.) to put his team up 1-0. On the very next at-bat, junior first baseman Brett Patnode (Weare, N.H.) drove in Philibotte on a double to left-center to extend the lead to two. Finally, sophomore right-fielder Kyle Dobrie (Mastic, N.Y.) doubled home Patnode as the NEC took a commanding 3-0 lead.
  • Down 4-3 in the top of the ninth and down to their final two outs, the 'Grims would tie it up on an RBI single from junior pinch-hitter Johnny Cannavo (Weymouth, Mass.) to drive in Philibotte. During the next at-bat, Cannavo was caught stealing, but the throw allowed junior pinch-runner Ryan Hughes (Northwood, N.H.) to score from third, giving the lead back to NEC.
  • NEC senior pitcher Alex Perez (Leominster, Mass.) was outstanding in relief, allowing just one earned run in three innings while striking out seven Lions and picking up his first win of the season.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Sunday, March 12th when they travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for their spring break trip.
