Softball Splits to Marywood, Gallaudet

CLERMONT, Fla. – The New England College softball team split two games at the Spring Games in Clermont, Florida on Thursday, falling short to the Pacers of Marywood University, 5-3, before grinding out a tough 8-6 win over the Bison of Gallaudet University in the nightcap.

GAME 1 – MARYWOOD 5, NEC 3
  • The 'Grims took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of game one when freshman catcher Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.) hit an RBI single to center to drive in freshman centerfielder Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.).
  • Down 3-1 in the top of the fifth, Giesler hit an RBI triple to plate freshman second baseman Ariana Cray (Merrimack, N.H.). Then in the top of the sixth, NEC would tie it up when freshman right-fielder Amaya Rodriguez (Indio, Calif.) scored from third on a throwing error, making it 3-3. But the Pacers would regain the lead by plating two runs in the bottom of the sixth, eventually prevailing.
GAME 2 – NEC 8, GALLAUDET 6
  • Facing the Bison in game two, the Pilgrims were tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when freshman second baseman Ashleigh Lemay (Derry, N.H.) singled up the middle to score two runs from senior left-fielder Monica Andrade (Escondido, Calif.) and freshman third baseman Bella Sciuto (Bedford, N.H.).
  • In the bottom of the third, the 'Grims busted out with four runs. A bases-loaded RBI single by Andrade was followed up by freshman first baseman Bella Kieran (Salem, N.H.) plating another run with a single to left center. Sciuto drew a bases-loaded walk to score senior designated player Taylor Maher (Piscataway, N.J.) and the run was capped off with a sacrifice fly from Lemay to plate Andrade as NEC surged ahead at 7-1.
  • Clinging to a two-run lead at the bottom of the sixth, NEC senior catcher Emily Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.) reached on an error, stole second base, stole third base, then reached home on a passed ball to give the 'Grims a buffer as they held on for an 8-6 win.
UP NEXT
  • NEC is back on the field on Friday when they Plymouth State at 9:00 a.m. followed by an 11:30 a.m. game against Wisconsin Lutheran College.
