Huge Fifth Sees Softball Erupt Past Warriors

CLERMONT, Fla. – The New England College softball team split their Friday double-header at the Spring Games in Clermont, Florida, falling short 4-2 to Plymouth State in their opener before exploding with a 9-0 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College in game two at Legend's Way.

GAME 1 – PLYMOUTH STATE 4, NEC 2
  • Down 2-0 in the bottom of the second against the Panthers, the 'Grims got on the board when senior first baseman Taylor Maher (Piscataway, N.J.) scored from third on a passed ball. Maher would score again in the bottom of the seventh off an RBI groundout from senior left-fielder Monica Andrade (Escondido, Calif.) as NEC fell short.
GAME 2 – NEC 9, WISCONSIN LUTHERAN 0
  • Facing the Warriors against Wisconsin Lutheran in a rematch of last Sunday's 4-1 loss, the 'Grims capitalized on two miscues to score two runs in the top of the third from senior left-fielder Emily Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.) and freshman centerfielder Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.).
  • In the top of the fifth, NEC would post their best inning of the season to date with seven runs. An RBI single to left by freshman catcher Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.) drove Gagne in again, followed by an RBI single by graduate shortstop Destiny Helmedach (Middlefield, Conn.) to plate Giesler. Freshman right-fielder Amaya Rodriguez (Indio, Calif.) continued her strong rookie season with an RBI single to bring home Lopez, while Helmedach scored on an error. Freshman second baseman Ashleigh Lemay (Derry, N.H.) drove in Medrano and Rodriguez, and finally, freshman third baseman Bella Sciuto (Bedford, N.H.) singled up the middle to score Lemay.
  • NEC sophomore pitcher Olivia Olson (North Haven, Conn.) picked up her third win of the season with a three-strikeout shutout performance, allowing just four hits.
