CLERMONT, Florida - The New England College softball team picked up their first two wins of the season on Tuesday in Clermont, Florida, defeating Fredonia State University 11-3 and narrowly besting Macalester College 8-7 in a walk-off win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Fredonia jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the first inning, but NEC would hold the Scots to just 1 run beyond that point.

The Pilgrims would go on to score at least a run in every inning, headlined by a 3-run fourth inning capped off by an RBI double by senior infielder Taylor Maher (Piscataway, N.J.). She would get one-upped by teammate and freshman outfielder Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.) who legged out an RBI triple in the fifth inning.

Sophomore pitcher Olivia Olson (North Haven, Conn.) threw a complete game for the 'Grims, setting down the Blue Devils in order in the seventh inning to secure the win.

Pilgrims 1 & 2 hitters, senior catcher Emily Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Giesler, combined for 7 hits, 5 runs scored, and 3 runs batted in.

Olson threw her second career complete game and improved to 1-1 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In a back-and-forth game featuring five lead changes and four ties, NEC entered the sixth inning trailing 3-7. A rally was jumpstarted when freshman outfielder Camryn Diaz (Indio, Calif.) hit an RBI double followed by an RBI by freshman infielder Ariana Cray (Merrimack, N.H.). Gagne would then hit a base knock to left field to score Diaz and make it a 6-7 ballgame going into the seventh inning.

Graduate infielder Destiny Helmedach (Middlefield, Conn.) hit a one-out single and advanced to second on the play. She would score on a single by Maher to tie the game at 7 a piece. Finally, the freshman Cray would play hero with a walk-off single to center scoring Maher to win the game.
