JOHNSON, VT – The New England College women's basketball team won their non-conference game on Tuesday at Carter Gym in Johnson, Vermont.
THE BASICS
Score: New England College 57, Vermont State University Johnson 34
Records: Pilgrims 6-4, 1-0 GNAC | Badgers 1-8, 0-2 NAC
TURNING POINTS
- The Pilgrims started the game out strong with an 8-0 run ended by a strong defensive stand in the first quarter, only allowing four points to be scored. Senior guard Juliana Hernandez (McFarland, Calif.) led the charge in that one, scoring six points.
- Scoring in the second quarter began to slow down a bit as the Badgers picked things up on the defensive side of ball but NEC still managed to outscore them in the quarter, 9-7.
- Junior forward Gabriella Matlock (Tulare, Calif.) led the team in scoring throughout the third quarter with nine points that helped NEC surge towards a dominant 44-21 lead into the final quarter.
- From that point on the Pilgrims tacked on an additional 13 points to ensure their win over the Badgers on the evening.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- NEC was stellar from the charity stripe going 7-7 from the line.
- NEC Matlock led the team in scoring recording 13 points along with rebounding gathering nine.
- NEC junior guard Amya Moss (Norfolk, Va.) had a performance that resulted in 10 points, three assists, three rebounds, and three steals.
- NEC junior guard Isyss Scott (Bakersfield, Calif.) managed to gather four points and eight rebounds.
- NEC Hernandez had seven points while also having three rebounds.
- NEC senior guard Alissia Corona (Wylie, Tex.) tallied up six points and six rebounds.
- NEC outscored VSU Johnson 30-14 by points in the paint.
UP NEXT
- Up next for NEC, the team will be back on the road to compete against the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Saturday at 1 PM from James A. Calhoun Gymnasium.
- VSU Johnson will be hosting SUNY Delhi on Friday at 7:30 PM.
