Women’s Ice Hockey Opens NEHC Play Against Elmira

HENNIKER, N.H. – The New England College women's ice hockey team opened their 2023-2024 New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) schedule with a 7-1 loss to visiting Elmira College on Friday evening at Lee Clement Arena in Henniker, New Hampshire in action.

THE BASICS
Score:                    Elmira 7, New England College 1
Records:               Pilgrims 0-3-0, 0-1-0 NEHC | Soaring Eagles 2-1-0, 1-0-0 NEHC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Soaring Eagles, ranked sixth in the nation in the most recent USCHO Division III Women's Poll, scored just 48 seconds into the game as Elmira junior forward McKenzie Schmidt (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the season, assisted by senior defender Madi Morton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and sophomore forward MK Boyle (Newport, R.I.).
  • With 3:19 to go in the first, Elmira senior forward Emily Lenzen (Littleton, Colo.) scored her second career goal as an Eagle, assisted by sophomore forward Piper Andrews (Fergus Falls, Minn.) and sophomore defender Mandy McCarrick (Elmira, N.Y.) as the visitors entered the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.
  • The Eagles went up by three at 4:17 into the second period when Elmira junior forward Erika Goleniak (Canton, Mich.) scored her team-leading third goal of the season, assisted by McCarrick and junior defender Katie Manning (Chicago, Ill.).
  • With 3:44 to go in the second, the 'Grims finally got on the board when NEC freshman forward Sofia Gualtieri (Montreal, Quebec) scored her second career goal, assisted by sophomore forward Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.) and sophomore forward Olivia Lindberg (Stockholm, Sweden), pulling the hosts to within two at 3-1.
  • From that point forward, however, it would be all Elmira. Goleniak scored her second goal of the season with 2:08 left in the second, and graduate forward Holley Riva (Lakeville, Conn.) made it 5-1 just a minute later as the Soaring Eagles took a four-goal lead into the second intermission.
  • Morton scored just 1:10 into the third to increase the lead to five, and with 44.2 seconds left, Boyle made it 7-1 for the final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • NEC graduate goaltender Hannah Podvey (West Caldwell, N.J.), getting her first start of the year, tallied a career-high 58 saves between the pipes for the Pilgrims. At press time, Podvey's total ranks first in the nation for the most saves in a single game so far this season.
  • Elmira graduate goaltender Chloe Beaubien (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded eight stops for the Soaring Eagles.
  • Team shots were 105-16 in favor of Elmira.
  • The 'Grims penalty-killing unit stepped up on the night, turning away the vaunted Eagles on five-of-six power plays.
UP NEXT
  • NEC has a quick turnaround as they'll be back on the ice on Saturday when they host William Smith College in a 3:00 p.m. game.
  • Elmira plays their next game on Saturday when they travel to Norwich University to play the Cadets in a rematch of last year's National Championship game. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
