LEXINGTON, Mass. - The New England College men's soccer team faced off against Lesley University, this time as non-conference foes, and the 'Grims would pull off the second-half comeback to defeat the Lynx 2-1 on Sunday at Minuteman Field in Lexington, Massachusetts.
THE BASICS
Score: New England College 2, Lesley University 1
Records: Pilgrims 7-4-4 | Lynx 3-11-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the final seconds of the first half, NEC junior forward Michael Moore (Rochester, N.H.) gathered a loose ball, turned, and as the buzzer sounded, rocketed a shot over the Lesley goalie, but hard off the top crossbar. The 'Grims were mere inches away from taking a one-goal lead, but instead the two former conference rivals would take a 0-0 tie into halftime.
- In the 67th minute, it was the Lynx who would get on the board first, with a go-ahead goal by freshman Miguel Vasconcelos (Sharon, Mass.), assisted by freshman Marc Kenny Derac (Waltham, Mass.).
- Now trailing, the 'Grims were in need of an equalizer. In the 81st minute, sophomore midfielder Wyatt Flibbert (Windham, Maine) got deep into Lesley territory before sending a perfect cross in front of the opposition's net. And in their time of need, it was senior forward Logan Cassin (Penacook, N.H.) who received the cross and scored on a game-tying header. But the Pilgrims were not content with a tie and were searching for one more.
- In the 86th minute, following a Lesley foul, junior midfielder Darren Mota (Inverness, Scotland) took a quick free kick – catching the defenders off guard - and found Flibbert on the wing who would take a few steps before netting the game-winning goal.
