NEC Drops Regular-Season Finale at Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn.- The New England College Softball team closes out the regular season today, as they dropped two games down in Connecticut to New England Collegiate Conference foe Mitchell College Sunday afternoon.

Score: Mitchell College 12, New England College 8 (Game One)

Mitchell College 11, New England College 3 – Five Innings (Game Two)

Records: Pilgrims (12-18, 4-8 NECC) | Mariners (19-19, 6-6 NECC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One – Mitchell College 12, New England College 8

Mitchell jumped out to an early lead as they plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Mariners' lead would continue to grow, as they plated three runs in the second inning to go up 7-0. New England College got on the board in the top of the third inning, as Daelyn Ross hit her 11th home run of the year, driving in Emily Gagne. The hosts would continue to pull away from the Pilgrims, as they plated two runs in the third and three in the fourth, to go up 12-2.

NEC cut into the ten-run deficit, as they plated three runs in the top of the fifth and three more in the seventh. The Pilgrims had runners on second and third with two outs in the inning but could not complete the comeback.


Game Two – Mitchell College 11, New England College 3 – Five Innings
New England College was the first team to strike, as Destiny Helmedach singled home Jailen Dickens in the top of the first. Mitchell responded with eight runs in the bottom half of the second inning. After the Mariners added two more runs in the bottom of the third to go up 10-1, the Pilgrims answered with a pair of scores in the top of the fourth.

Mitchell finished the scoring in the bottom of the fourth to take game two, 11-3 in five innings.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Ross is now third all-time in program history with 22 career home runs.
  • New England College leads the all-time series, 9-3.
