CLERMONT, Fla.-The New England College softball team wrapped up a 14-game trip to the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Florida with a split, falling 9-1 to Anderson University before rallying for a 5-1 win over Westfield State in the final game.
The Pilgrims wrap up their spring break trip with a 3-11 record.
ANDERSON 9, NEC 1 (Five Innings)
Anderson used seven hits and an error to score eight runs in the bottom of the second inning to open the game up. The Pilgrims scored a run of their own in the top of the third, but Anderson added another run in the bottom of the fourth to enforce the five-inning mercy rule.
The Pilgrims were held to just two hits by Anderson pitcher Hadley Decker. NEC's hits came from Julia D'Andrea (Greenwich, Conn.) and Alexa Scribner (Falmouth, Mass.).
Anderson compiled 12 hits, including two hits each from the bottom three batters in the lineup.
NEC 5, WESTFIELD STATE 1
In the Pilgrims final game, freshman
Taylor Barbour (Bay Shore, N.Y.) pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits, one run, three walks and three strikeouts over the seven innings.
NEC took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Destiny Helmedach (Middlefield, Conn.). The Pilgrims extended their lead by four runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-hit, one-error inning. D'Andrea and Taylor Dill (Bellingham, Mass.) both had single RBIs before an error by the Westfield second baseman allowed two more runs to score.
The Pilgrims looked poised for the shutout win until Westfield used back-to-back singles to score one run in the top of the seventh.
D'Andrea led the team with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. As a team, the Pilgrims compiled six hits.
