HENNIKER, N.H. - The New England College men's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season, picking up a 3-0 victory over the University of Maine, Presque Isle on Saturday.
The teams traded chances early in the opening frame before freshman Ethan Zuniga (Wallingford, Conn.) found the back of the net at the 18:33 mark, giving the Pilgrims an early 1-0 advantage. Senior Chase Gurtowsky (Torrington, Conn.) and sophomore Amit Solomon (Wilton, Conn.) were credited with the assists. The 'Grims continued to apply the pressure late in the half, firing several shots in an effort to extend their lead, but NEC entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
The Pilgrims wasted no time adding to their lead in the second half, as senior Jack LaBroad (East Kingston, N.H.) scored to make it 2-0. Gurtowsky and junior Levi Campbell (Goffstown, N.H.) recorded the assists on the goal. Just minutes later, Zuniga struck again, scoring his second goal of the afternoon to push the 'Grims advantage to 3-0. The Owls continued to battle and looked to get on the scoreboard, but the NEC defense held firm, limiting UMPI to just two shots in the half as the Pilgrims secured the 3-0 shutout victory.
Zuniga led the Pilgrims with two goals, while Gurtowsky recorded two assists. Senior goalkeeper Lukas Tate (South Jordan, Utah) made two saves to earn the shutout, while the NEC defense limited the Owls to just four shots.
The 'Grims return to action tomorrow, hosting the Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology at 1:00 PM.
