Late Penalty Stroke Decides Overtime Battle

NEWTON, Mass. – New England College Field Hockey traveled to Newton for a midweek Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC)  matchup against Lasell University on Wednesday evening.

The Pilgrims and Lasers battled evenly throughout regulation, with NEC holding an 8-7 shot advantage in the first half. Both teams recorded five saves through the opening 30 minutes.

Lasell controlled possession early in the third quarter, limiting the Pilgrims' offensive opportunities. NEC recorded two shots in the final four minutes of the period, including an attempt from freshman Molly Goodwin (Guilford, Maine). With 16 seconds remaining and Lasell playing down a player due to a yellow card, senior Kylee Henriquez (Methuen, Mass.) fired a shot toward goal, but the Lasers' goalkeeper made the save.

In the fourth quarter, Lasell recorded four shots, including two on goal, while senior Annie Raduazzo (Amherst, N.H.) turned aside both attempts. Despite being outshot 4-1 in the final quarter, Raduazzo and the Pilgrim defense held firm to force overtime with the score knotted at 0-0.

Goodwin recorded the first shot of overtime, but NEC could not capitalize. Just past the 64th minute, Lasell converted a penalty stroke to secure the 1-0 victory.

The Pilgrims are back at home on Saturday where they will host University of Saint Joseph's (Conn.) and where the team will honor their 12 graduating seniors.
