NEW LONDON, N.H. - The New England College men's soccer team fell 2-1 on the road to Colby-Sawyer College Tuesday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.
The teams battled in the opening minutes, trading chances as several shots sailed just wide of the net. The Chargers struck first when Judson DiMaria found the back of the net to give Colby-Sawyer an early 1-0 advantage. NEC responded with pressure of its own as sophomore Lukas McGuire (Lunenburg, Mass.) tested the Chargers' defense, but his attempt was stopped by CSC goalkeeper Trenton Mikulanis. Colby-Sawyer added another goal seven minutes later to double its advantage and take a 2-0 lead into the half.
The 'Grims applied pressure early, as freshman Ethan Zuniga (Wallingford, Conn.) fired a shot that was turned away by Mikulanis. Less than a minute later, sophomore Amit Solomon (Wilton, Conn.) delivered a corner kick into the box, where McGuire connected for the finish to cut the deficit to 2-1. The teams battled throughout the remainder of the frame, with NEC pushing for the equalizer, but the Chargers' defense held firm to secure the 2-1 win.
McGuire netted his first collegiate goal, while Solomon recorded his fourth assist of the season. Senior goalkeeper Matt Guzman (San Bernardino, Calif.) finished the afternoon with two saves for the Pilgrims, while Mikulanis recorded eight saves for the Chargers.
The Pilgrims return home Thursday to host Vermont State – Randolph at Don Melander Field, with kickoff set for 4:00 PM.
