NEWTON, MASS. - The New England College Field Hockey team travelled to Newton Monday afternoon for a non-conference match up against the UMass Boston Beacons. Senior Adelaide Kelly (Rockport, Maine) led the team with four goals, while junior Kennedy Overhoff (Whitefield, N.H.) recorded two assists.
The Pilgrims applied pressure early in the first period, recording 11 total shots. Kelly broke through in the third minute with an assist from Overhoff to give NEC an early lead. Shortly after, the Pilgrims were back on the offensive, inserting a penalty corner as sophomore Mary Kelley (Cumberland, R.I.) connected with senior Kameryn Mazzulli (Waterford, Conn.) to extend the lead. Three minutes later, Kelly and Overhoff found each other again, with Kelly scoring her second goal of the game. At the buzzer, junior Jaylen Marsh (Methuen, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal to put the Pilgrims up 4-0 heading into the second period.
NEC kept the momentum going in the second, coming out with a quick goal from senior Kacey McClay (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.). Six minutes later, sophomore Madison Brown (Goffstown, N.H.) scored her first goal of the season after her initial shot was blocked, bringing the Pilgrims' lead to 6-0 going into halftime.
Senior Annie Raduazzo (Amherst, N.H.) faced one shot and recorded zero saves in the first 30 minutes.
Just one minute and 13 seconds into the third period, Kelly completed her hat trick. Shortly after, the Beacons recorded their second shot of the game following a penalty corner, but it was not enough to break the shutout for the 'Grims. Just short of the end of the period, Kelly scored her fourth goal of the game with an assist from senior Elliott Connor (Henniker, N.H.), marking Connor's first assist as a Pilgrim.
To round out the game, NEC outshot UMass Boston 8-2 in the final period, while senior Amy Philbin (Long Island, N.Y.) made two saves in her 30 minutes in front of the goal.
The Pilgrims have little downtime as they are back in action at Don Melander Field Tuesday night against Gordon College at 7 p.m.
