Softball Splits Mid-Week Doubleheader

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – NEC Softball traveled north to face non-conference opponent Plymouth State University on Thursday afternoon, earning a split with a 5-1 win in game one before falling 9-4 in game two.

Game One – NEC 5, PSU 1

The opening inning featured a strong pitching duel. Two of NEC's first three batters struck out, while sophomore Amanda Magro (Phoenix, Ariz.) matched that effort in the circle, striking out the first Panther she faced before her defense backed her up to end the inning with one runner left on base.

NEC broke through in the second inning. Freshman Makayla Halley (Ventura, Calif.) led off with a single up the middle, followed by a walk from senior Surena Montero (Bakersfield, Calif.). With two outs, senior Abigail Grimes (Baltimore, Md.) worked an eight-pitch walk to load the bases for senior Ashleigh Lemay (Derry, N.H.), who delivered a clutch double down the left field line to clear the bases and give NEC a 3-0 lead.

Plymouth State got on the board in the third inning when Kenzie Bessette tripled to left field and scored on a single by Ariana Cray, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The 'Grims added two insurance runs in the sixth. Senior Emma Lopez (Downey, Calif.) singled to left, and Halley followed with another strong at-bat to reach base. Later in the inning, Magro helped load the bases before Grimes drew a walk to bring in Lopez. Lemay followed with another walk, scoring Halley and extending the lead to 5-1.

The Panthers threatened in the seventh, putting two runners on, but NEC's defense held firm to secure the win.

Magro earned her ninth win of the season, allowing just one run on two walks while striking out seven.

Game Two – NEC 4, PSU 9

Plymouth State jumped out to an early lead, scoring six runs over the first three innings while NEC struggled to capitalize on early baserunners.

NEC answered in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on four hits. Lopez came around to score after senior Julia Maker (Warwick, R.I.) singled and advanced to second on an outfield error. Later in the inning, Lemay added another double to left field, driving in junior Sonia Garcia (Victorville, Calif.) to cut the deficit to 7-2.

The Panthers added to their lead in the bottom half of the inning, but NEC continued to battle. In the sixth, the 'Grims loaded the bases with two hits and a walk, but a lineout to the pitcher ended the threat.

NEC carried that momentum into the seventh. Junior Sydney MacLean (Keene, N.H.) reached as a pinch hitter to lead off the inning, and senior Grace Giesler (La Mirada, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to put runners in scoring position. Grimes followed with a single to drive in two runs. Lopez and Garcia both reached to load the bases again, but two strikeouts ended the rally, sealing the 9-4 final.

NEC returns home on Saturday to host Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
