HENNIKER, N.H. - New England College Esports took home a Spring Championship on Wednesday night, defeating the University of Michigan in five games of a best-of-seven series to be crowned the NECC Division VII victors.
The series opened with a tightly contested Game 1, as sophomore Tyler Biesinger scored the equalizer with 2:04 remaining to force overtime. Senior Riley Burkins then delivered the game-winning goal just 24 seconds into the extra period, giving the Grims an early 1–0 series lead. Michigan responded in Game 2 with a 4–0 victory, leveling the series.
In Game 3, the Grims regained momentum. Biesinger scored just 14 seconds into the match off an assist from Burkins, while junior Derek Bader Jr. added a late goal to force overtime. Bader then secured the win with an individual effort just seven seconds into the overtime period, putting the Grims ahead 2–1 in the series.
Game 4 showcased a strong defensive and late-game offensive performance. Biesinger broke the scoreless tie with just 38 seconds remaining, and Burkins followed with two goals, including one at the buzzer, to secure a 3–0 victory and bring the Grims within one game of the championship.
The Grims delivered a commanding performance in Game 5 to close out the series. Burkins led the offensive surge with four goals, while Bader contributed three goals and three assists. Biesinger added a goal and an assist as the team secured an 8–3 win to clinch the championship.
Across the series, the Grims demonstrated consistent offensive pressure and timely defensive plays. Burkins emerged as a key offensive leader with six goals, Bader provided critical playmaking and clutch scoring, while Biesinger contributed pivotal goals in momentum-shifting moments along with a team-high nine saves.
With this victory, the NEC Grims claim the NECC Rocket League Conference Championship, marking a significant achievement for the program and solidifying their position among the top collegiate Rocket League teams.
