NEW LONDON, CONN. - 13 different Pilgrims found the back of the net as the New England College women's lacrosse team recorded a season-high 25 goals in their dominant Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Riley Davis (Weare, N.H.) opened the scoring, giving NEC a 1-0 lead. Late in the first frame, Davis, sophomore Lilly Vaughn (Belmont, N.H.), and freshman Sydney Bailey (Boscawen, N.H.) added goals to build momentum for the Pilgrims. Davis secured her hat trick at the 4:46 mark, sparking a continued offensive surge. Senior Meadow Gilchrist (Stamford, Conn.), juniors Alexis Hornsby (Atkinson, N.H.) and Carmela Goodwin (Lebanon, N.H.), along with freshman Camryn Coutts (Gilford, N.H.) each found the net to extend the 'Grims lead after one.
NEC continued its offensive surge, netting six goals in the second quarter. Junior Lucy Armour (Falmouth, Mass.), sophomore Jamie Blondin (Oakville, Ont.), Goodwin, and Davis each added a goal, while Gilchrist scored twice to give the 'Grims a commanding lead heading into halftime.
The second half mirrored the first, as the Pilgrims added four goals in the third frame. Junior Sofia Gualtieri (Montreal, Quebec), sophomore Kennedy Dwyer (Weare, N.H.), Bailey, and Gilchrist each found the back of the net. The Mariners continued to battle, as Lauren Cordero scored the lone goal at the 3:50 mark.
NEC kept the pressure on offensively in the final frame, scoring five goals. Freshman Kendall Purtell (Epsom, N.H.), Hornsby, and Bailey each tallied a goal, while freshman Ayla Paley (Warwick, R.I.) netted two to seal the Pilgrims' 25-1 win.
Gilchrist led all players with eight points, scoring five goals and adding three assists, along with four draw controls. Senior Mackenzie McDonald (Boscawen, N.H.) recorded four assists, two ground balls, and six draw controls. Blondin chipped in one goal, four ground balls, two caused turnovers, and six draw controls. Freshman Tatum Villa (Framingham, Mass.) made two saves while allowing zero goals in the first half, and sophomore Erin Keville (Canterbury, N.H.) recorded two saves in relief during the second half.
The 'Grims travel north on Tuesday to Northfield, Vermont to face Norwich University at 7:00 PM.
