A Quick Look
The NEC softball team came up on the short end of a pair of games today in Florida. In game 1, the Pilgrims dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Rose Hulman before taking a 7-3 loss to Cornell College of Iowa. The Pilgrims are currently 2-6 overall with two games remaining before returning back north on Sunday.
Game 1 – Rose Hulman Institute 3, NEC 2
After retiring the Pilgrims in order in the top of the first inning, the Engineers went to work in the bottom of the frame plating a pair of runs to grab an early 2-0 lead. With two outs, junior Kayla Scnippel hit an RBI single to drive in sophomore Emily Hodges. Schnippel then scored on an RBI triple to right field by freshman Abigale Shearer.
Shearer drove in another run in the home half of the third to give the Engineers a 3-0 lead. She hit a single on the right field line that knocked in junior Aubrey Smith.
Smith, who was the starter for Rose Hulman, cruised through the first four innings retiring the first 12 Pilgrims she faced.
The 'Grims finally broke through in the fifth scoring a single run to cut the lead to a pair. Freshman
Makayla Halley (Ventura, CA) led off the inning with a single through the left side. She advanced to second base on a ground out and moved to third base on a wild pitch. Halley came in to score on a ground out to second base by sophomore
Amanda Magro (Phoenix, AZ).
The Pilgrims got one run closer in the top of the sixth inning when junior
Kate Gagne (Portsmouth, NH) scored on an RBI single from classmate
Abigail Grimes (Baltimore, MD). Gagne started the inning with a double to left field and found herself on third base via a wild pitch.
In the seventh inning, Magro singled and went to second base on a ground out before moving to third base on a Gagne single. Unfortunately, that's where Magro would be left, as Smith got the final out on a line drive to right field.
Freshman
Kendal Cote (Charlestown, NH) suffered the loss for NEC allowing three runs on six hits while striking out one batter.
Game 2 – Cornell 7, NEC 3
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings until Cornell scored to game's first run in the top of the fourth. Junior Corrin Kennedy led off with a triple down the left field line and was followed with an RBI double off the bat of senior Peyton Souhrada.
The Pilgrims struck for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. The 'Grims loaded the bases with one out and pinch runner
Kyndal Murawski (Putnam, CT) scored the first run when junior
Sonia Garcia (Victorville, CA) walked. The next run was scored by senior
Emma Lopez (Downey, CA) on a fielder's choice that turned into a second run when the Cornell shortstop overthrew the third baseman allowing Halley to score.
Cornell regained the lead in the fifth inning banging out four hits that led to four runs. The big hit in the inning was a double to left field by junior Elise Oleson that drove in a pair of runs.
Cornell tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to increase its lead to 7-3. That's where the score would stand, as Cornell's defense and winning pitcher Lauren Summers kept the Pilgrims in check.
