Colby Proves Too Much for Pilgrims in Sunday Doubleheader

WATERVILLE, Maine - The hometown Mules bested the NEC baseball team on Sunday, taking both games of a non-conference doubleheader by scores of 12-0 and 6-1.

Colby scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning while hitting just one ball out of the infield, capitalizing on a pair of infield singles and an NEC error to take an early 2-0 lead. The Pilgrims loaded the bases in the second, but back-to-back strikeouts from Mules' starter Adam Schwartz ended the half-inning with no damage done. Schwartz would end the game with nine punch outs across five scoreless innings.

The hosts had runners on second and third with one out in the third, but junior Paul Foster (Billerica, Mass.) got out of the inning unscathed. Things unraveled in the fourth as Colby College put up nine runs in the inning en route to a 12-0 final.

In the nightcap, the Mules plated two runs in the bottom of the second before the 'Grims responded with a run of their own in the top of the fourth. Senior Nick Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) reached on a one-out single and would immediately score on a double down the left field line by graduate Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) to pull within one.

The Mules added onto their lead with two in the fourth and one in both the fifth and sixth innings to eventually win by a score of 6-1. Greg Levin earned the win for Colby after permitting just the one run in four innings, while NEC freshman Nate Gallant (Epping, N.H.) took the loss while going the complete six innings.

The team will play one final non-conference tune-up against MIT on Wednesday, March 18th, at 3:00 PM, before beginning GNAC league play on Saturday, March 21st.
