MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - It was a day to remember for graduate Brady Philibotte (Weare, N.H.) who, in game one, became the program's all-time leader in doubles, and, in game two, crushed a go-ahead grand slam in an 8-6 win over Vermont State University-Lyndon at the Ripken Experience on Sunday.
Philibotte doubled to deep center field in the fifth inning of the first game of the doubleheader to surpass Connor Morin as the program leader in doubles with his 34th two-bagger as a Pilgrim.
NEC took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the first game as freshman Dillan Abbate (Port Jervis, N.Y.) walked in a run with the bases loaded, followed by a two-run single by freshman TJ Hicks (Tampa, Fla.) for his first collegiate hit.
On the mound, junior Paul Foster (Billerica, Mass.) allowed just two earned through five-and-two-third innings with three strikeouts. The Hornets scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to spoil Foster's outing and send the game to extra innings. The game would end in the bottom of the ninth as Lyndon plated the winning run on a wild pitch to take game one, 4-3.
The Hornets carried the momentum into the nightcap, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. They scored again in the fourth while Philibotte drove in a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 4-1 game.
Down three in the sixth, the 'Grims began to rally as the first three batters reached base and senior Nick Hernandez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) knocked one in on an infield single. Two batters later, Abbate drove in two with a hard-hit single up the middle to knot the game up at 4-4.
Junior Mike Monteforte (Wilmington, Mass.) and senior Ryan Cote (Goffstown, N.H.) each reached base to set the stage for Philibotte at the plate with the bases loaded in a tied game. Philibotte took the 1-1 pitch to the deepest part of the ballpark for a game-breaking grand slam to give the 'Grims an 8-4 lead.
VTSU-Lyndon scored twice in the top of the seventh inning as the first four batters reached base. Sophomore Jaken Pellerin (Manchester, N.H.) gunned down a Hornet's runner at the plate for the first out of the inning, before Abbate, on the mound, forced a game-ending double play. Freshman Nate Gallant (Epping, N.H.) earned the win after going six strong innings with a .136 batting average against.
After an off day on Monday, the team resumes Spring Break play on Tuesday at 11:00 AM with a single game against Neumann University.
