WESTON, Mass. - Junior Jayden Estrada (La Mirada, Calif.) had a season high of 23 points and junior Camryn Lewis (Taunton, Mass.) along with senior Ajayah Lively (Victorville, Calif.) both recorded double-doubles Saturday afternoon as the Pilgrims fell on the road to Regis College.
Estrada started her personal best game with two three pointers to jump out to a 6-2 lead on the Pride. Which was not kept long until two quick layups were made for the score to be tied up at six just about halfway through the first quarter. The next five minutes were back and forth for the two teams with NEC leading only by one after Estrada made a pair of free throws.
Regis started the scoring in the second quarter with a made jump shot, but NEC jumped back out in front with sophomore Kaira Creary (Federal Way, Wash) with a made three of her own and Lewis adding to it. This helped the 'Grims take a nine-point lead however Regis slowly but surely crawled back right before halftime leading by one at 40-41.
Neither team backed down in the third quarter. The Pride was able to go on an 8-0 run, which NEC was able to cut only a two-point lead by Creary. The 'Grims could not secure a lead in the third and went into the final quarter with a score of 57-60.
The final 10 minutes were hard fought by both teams; senior Mackenzie McDonald (Boscawen, N.H.) made back-to-back three pointers for the team to stay competitive. However, Regis went on a nine-point run, taking them up 73-63. NEC would not let that stop them with Estrada stopping the bleed with a three pointer and Lewis making two more quick layups. Lively was successful in getting them within one after a jump shot. The last two minutes of the game were evenly matched with both teams scoring eight points and McDonald making a three pointer with eleven seconds left and bringing the game to a close final score of 83-81.
NEC was 82.4% from the free-throw line and being 100% in the second and fourth quarters. NEC hopes to get back in the winning column at home against Norwich University on Wednesday night.
