New Bedford, Mass. - The New England College Men's Ice Hockey Team sailed past the Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth in a 5-2 win on Friday night.
The first period was scoreless with the 'Grims outshooting their opponents 12-9 and three of those shots taken by junior Gunnar Sibley (Monticello, Minn.). With the start of the second period, the team jumped out with 10-1 shots in the first three and a half minutes. Then with about six minutes left and UMASS on a powerplay, sophomore Egor Osipik (Minsk, Belarus) was able to cross the zone and find the top of the net after drawing the goalie out of the net to put the 'Grims up on a shorthanded goal. After a bobble of the puck by Dartmouth, Osipik received the puck at neutral ice and found the net again from about the same spot. Helping the Pilgrims take a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Starting the third period, UMD went on their sixth power play of the game. This time they were able to capitalize on it after Graham Burke denied Osipik's first chance at a hattrick. The Corsairs gained possession and took the puck down the ice and scored by Kailin Chen, cutting the lead in half to 2-1. Minutes later this time at even strength Alex Walker tied the game at two with 15 minutes left.
The next several minutes were back and forth until freshman Wyatt Gibson (Pelham, Ont.) squeaked a goal past UMD with assists from senior Graham Hassan (Pinckney, Mich.) and freshman Jack Ohlund (Lakeville, Minn.). This gave the lead back to the Pilgrims and started the sinking of the Corsairs because Gibson was able to tip the puck in on a powerplay after a direct blast from senior Graham Padgitt (St. Charles, Ill.). The goal extended the lead 4-2.
The last five and a half minutes were back and forth. Until Osipik found the net on a powerplay and an empty net with 58 seconds left completing his first career hattrick. Sophomore Anthony Beaulieu (Lawrence, Mass.) secured his seventh win of the season with 29 saves.
The Grims are back on the road Saturday, February 7th against UMass-Boston at 4pm.
