Men's Basketball Comes Up Short in Non-Conference Battle with Bulldogs

HENNIKER, N.H. - The New England College men's basketball team dropped an 87-67 home contest to Dean College on Monday night.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-1 lead to open the first half, but a three pointer from sophomore Josh Robie (Bethlehem, N.H.) and back-to-back layups from sophomore Ryan Cuvier (Tewksbury, Mass.) tied the score at 8-8. The 'Grims regained momentum to take a 19-10 lead behind three-pointers from juniors Jasen Stovall (Tampa, Fla.) and Mike Strazzeri (Chichester, N.H.), along with a three from sophomore Jayden Welch (Lynn, Mass.). Dean responded to trim NEC's lead and continued to knock down shots late in the half, regaining a 27-23 lead with 5:48 remaining. Strazzeri chipped in two jumpers and a layup to tie the game at 29-29. The teams traded baskets down the stretch as the Bulldogs carried a narrow 35-31 lead into halftime.

Dean opened the second half with back-to-back baskets, but Strazzeri answered with a three for the 'Grims. The Bulldogs maintained control and knocked down shots to build their lead to double digits. Robie cut the lead to single digits by draining a three-pointer, but Dean answered to push their lead back to double digits. Junior Michael Hills (Baton Rouge, La.) hit a late jumper, but the Bulldogs continued to make shots of their own, pulling away down the stretch to secure the 87-67 victory.

Cuvier finished the night with 13 points and four rebounds while Strazzeri recorded in 12 points and Welch added 11. Welch and sophomore Luke Montejo (Tewksbury, Mass.) led the 'Grims with four rebounds apiece while Strazzeri led the team with nine assists.

The Pilgrims return to action on Wednesday as they host non-conference opponent Vermont State University – Randolph with a 6:00 PM tipoff.
