Men’s Hoops Drop GNAC Contest at Home

HENNIKER, N.H. - The New England College men's basketball team continued Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday, hosting Mitchell College, but ultimately fell to the Mariners, 86-72.

Mitchell jumped out to a 15-5 lead to open the contest before junior Mike Strazzeri (Chichester, N.H.) knocked down a jumper to slow the early run. The Mariners continued to find success offensively late in the half, building their advantage to 13 points. However, buckets from sophomore Josh Robie (Bethlehem, N.H.) and senior Kenray Emadamerho (Manchester, N.H.) helped cut the deficit to four with 3:39 remaining. The two teams traded baskets over the final minutes, and Mitchell carried a 41-31 lead into halftime.

The Mariners opened the second half by extending their lead, but a layup from sophomore Ryan Cuvier (Tewksbury, Mass.) and three-pointer from junior Jasen Stovall (Tampa, Fla.) trimmed the margin. Mitchell responded with an 18-2 run later in the half, though Strazzeri connected on a three to halt the surge. The Mariners quickly answered with back-to-back baskets from Jaxyn Beaudet and Troy Butler to regain momentum. NEC continued to battle, as senior Kyle Dzarnowski (Boca Raton, Fla.) buried a three to cut the visitors lead to 23. Mitchell again responded with timely baskets to keep control of the game. Sophomore Dimitre Sime (Lowell, Mass.) chipped in a quick eight points on two three-pointers and layup, while freshmen Charlie Amero (Gloucester, Mass.) and Tyrese Acevedo (Lawrence, Mass.) added late layups, but the Mariners secured the 86-72 win.

Strazzeri led the 'Grims with 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Cuvier followed with 11 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Junior Aiden MacLeod (Wilmington, Mass.) recorded nine points and four rebounds, while Sime finished with nine points, four rebounds, and an assist.

The Pilgrims continued GNAC action on Wednesday as they travel to the Jean Yawkey Center in Boston, Massachusetts, to take on Emmanuel College (Mass.). Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
