FITCHBURG, Mass. - The Fitchburg State Falcons used a pair of third period goals to take down men's ice hockey for the second time this season, as the Pilgrims suffered another close non-conference loss on Thursday night at the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
Sophomore Vesse-Wincent Lampen (Espoo, Finland) scored his first goal of the season with 6:36 left in the first, tying the game at 1-1 after Fitchburg had taken an early lead. Lampen took a pass from freshman Casey Sturm (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) around mid-ice and finessed his way around multiple Falcon defenders before sending a perfectly placed shot over the goaltenders' right shoulder.
The Falcons converted on a power-play chance late in the first period to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. NEC freshman Matteo Viglino (Davos, Switzerland) had the answer this time, tying the game up at 2-2 midway through the second period. Freshman Jaeseok Lee (Seoul, South Korea) stole the puck behind the Fitchburg net and found Viglino who sent a quick strike to the top shelf for the equalizer.
Fitchburg's Anthony DeLuca would score the game-winner 3:54 into the third period, beating the weak side of the NEC defense to put the hosts up. In the final two minutes, an empty netter for the Falcons would seal the deal, 4-2. Getting his third start of the season, senior Danny Miscavish (Macomb, Mich.) made 28 saves in the loss. Opposite Miscavish, Frederick Soderberg had 40 saves on the night.
The 'Grims return to the ice on Saturday as they host Plymouth State at 6:00 PM for a resumption of Little East Conference (LEC) play.
