HENNIKER, N.H. - The New England College women's soccer team came up short on the road Sunday afternoon, falling 5-1 in a non-conference matchup against the University of Maine – Farmington Beavers.
The teams came out aggressive in the opening half, exchanging shots on target, but 'Grims goalkeeper senior Hollie Bomba (Seymour, Conn.) made key saves to keep the score at 0-0. The Beavers broke through first, finding the back of the net in the 27th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Capitalizing on a series of fouls committed by the Pilgrims, the Beavers struck again ten minutes later to extend their lead to 2-0. Just thirty seconds later, the Beavers took full advantage of another 'Grims foul to score their third goal, heading into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
The Pilgrims continued to fight, and graduate Shelby McBain (Indianhead, Md.) wasted no time cutting into the Beavers' lead, scoring just 15 seconds into the second half off an assist from sophomore Abbey Keyes (Dedham, Mass.). However, ten minutes later, the Beavers responded by converting a penalty kick to push their advantage to 4-1. The Beavers maintained their offensive pressure and fired shots on target, but the 'Grims goalkeeper freshman Kendal Cote (Charlestown, N.H.) stood strong in net, making several key saves to keep her team in the match. The Beavers eventually broke through again in the 62nd minute to extend their lead and continued to test the Pilgrims' defense firing more shots on target. Cote remained composed in net, turning away three more shots and anchoring the defense through a high-pressure stretch. Both teams continued to trade shots late in the half, but the Beavers would come away with the 5-1 victory.
The Pilgrims will take a short break from game action and look to bounce back as they travel to Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday to take on Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Simmons University with a 1:00 PM start.
